Being An Engaged Civic Citizen

Are you engaged with the community around you as an active citizen? An active citizen is someone who takes on a role in society through activities such as volunteering, donating, protesting, advocacy, and research. Active citizens don’t stand on the sidelines; they see challenges and they step up to offer their expertise and aid.

A major benefit of studying the humanities through Humanities for All is that you can learn how to communicate your ideas better and enhance your development as you work toward becoming a more well-rounded human. At CCBC, we make it easy  to become an engaged civic citizen! Discover some of the ways you can do so below:

Community service gives you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of the needs of our community. If there’s a cause that’s near and dear to you, explore opportunities within student groups to show up. For example, if you’re interested in cooking, you can volunteer at a soup kitchen. There, you’ll be able to interact with people in the community. If there’s not already a volunteer group in an area you’re interested in, take your engagement to the next and become a student leader for a new group!

Service learning is a chance to deepen your civic knowledge through classes that investigate the complexities of social issues. Not only does CCBC offer a service learning program, but Humanities for All offers students the opportunity to explore social issues through courses like Critical Thinking; Ethics; and Diversity in a Technological Society.

Student employment is a great opportunity to seek an opportunity within an organization that will make a difference in your life and in the lives of others. This could be on or off campus and can lead to opportunities for growth down the road.

Civic leadership is the next step in any of the above ways to engage! Stay involved and consistent in your efforts. Speak up when you see room for improvement or chances to volunteer. And don’t be afraid to step up into leadership roles and encourage other citizens to join your cause!

When you participate in the community around you, you’re not just contributing to the greater good; you’re making an impact in the world. Humanities for All is a great place to start that journey!
